Is Nigeria the Awards Capital of Africa?

On 2 successive days this week, the world came to Abuja - literally.

On Tuesday, Daily Trust newspaper hosted its 1st ever African of the Year and named Congolese doctor - Denis Mukwege Mukengere as the winner. Here's the gist on how they came to that conclusion.

On Wednesday it was the turn of another newspaper, Thisday to out do the competition and they pulled out all the stops for the 14th THISDAY Awards Festival of Ideas. Everyone from Bill Clinton and Kofi Annan to Karl Rove and Lionel Richie was in town for what might have been Abuja's biggest gathering of celebrities this year.

Next month, Lagos is scheduled to host the annual CAF Footballer of The Year award. And come April, the Grammy-like Kora Music Awards will also be held in Lagos.

But some critics have questioned if all these awards are objective and actual rewards for excellence or just PR exercises.
